Fall Lawn Maintenance Tips

Fall is right around the corner and with it comes cooler weather and family gatherings for the holidays. Sod U has compiled helpful tips to help you prepare your lawn for winter dormancy and transition into the colder months of the year. Read below for general and specific tips to help your zoysiagrass, bermudagrass, or St. Augustinegrass lawn.

Zoysia

Fall lawn maintenance differs from that of spring and summer maintenance. With the changing of the seasons also comes the changing of temperatures, weather, and soil conditions. You will want to water less as temperatures begin to drop. Too much water can lead to disease. This is the time of year for fall fungus outbreaks, so be on the the lookout for any signs of diseases. Your zoysia should only need about one inch of water weekly. Apply a fungicide as well. This will help the grass enter colder months in a healthier condition. If you have had a fungus before, you may need to make multiple applications in affected areas. If you think you may have an insect infestation, it is smart to treat with a broad-spectrum insecticide. If you’ve had winter weeds in the past, apply a pre-emergent herbicide for prevention beforehand. Mow less during the fall. Keeping your zoysia slightly higher will encourage deeper root growth for winter. To make sure your zoysiagrass gets the nutrients it needs during this time, we recommend the Lawnifi™️ Fall Fertilizer Box. To be safe, apply a fungicide. It will help the grass enter colder months in a healthier condition. If you have had fungus before, you may need to make multiple applications in affected areas. For this reason, it is also smart to water less as temperatures drop. Too much water will lead to disease. If you have had a problem with winter weeds in the past, apply a pre-emergent herbicide for prevention. St. Augustine

Maintenance guidelines for mowing, irrigation, and fertilization slightly change as the weather alters, temperatures drop, and soil conditions change. One of the biggest things to look our for is disease in your St. Augustine as this is the time of year for fall fungus to take hold of your lawn. It is recommended that you apply a fungicide—even if it’s just a preventative application. This will help the grass enter colder months in healthier condition. If you have had a fungus before, you may need to make multiple applications in the affected areas. Along with the application of fungicide comes the applications of herbicides and insecticides as needed. If you’ve had problems with winter weeds in the past, it is a good idea to apply a pre-emergent herbicide for prevention. If you have noticed any insect damage in your St. Augustine, treat the infestation with a broad-spectrum insecticide. If you use a granular variety, water the lawn immediately after application to help soil absorption. Make sure it offers control for chinch bugs. Lawnifi Fall Fertilizer Box

The Fall Fertilizer Box consists of one bottle of Boost, one bottle of Maintain, and one bottle of Recover for a lesser price and better deal than purchasing all three bottles individually. In the early fall, apply Boost to revitalize the green lead blade color after the summer heat. The rapid green-up of your lawn will last from the time of application through the remainder of the growing season because of Boost’s time release formula. In mid-fall, apply Maintain for well-balanced nutrition. This helps with color retention and fortifies the root system. Lastly, in the late fall, make an application of Recover to prepare your lawn for winter dormancy.
