Our 72-count plug trays can cover up to 72 square feet when spaced 6–18 inches apart on center. For quicker ground cover, plant each plug closer together. Each plug is 1.25 inches long x 1.25 inches wide x 2 inches tall.”

To install grass plugs, follow these steps:

  1. Collect a soil sample and make any required soil amendments to create a conducive environment for plugs to grow.
  2. Prepare the soil by removing any weeds or debris. Mow existing lawn close to the ground. Rake the soil smooth and level.
  3. Water the soil thoroughly.
  4. Dig up or use an auger bit to drill holes for the plugs, spacing each hole 6–18 inches apart.
  5. Fertilize the holes before planting the grass plugs with a fertilizer that has a lot of phosphorus like Lawnifi Grow, the first bottle of the New Lawn Starter Box. Use Soil Moist Granules to reduce plant stress and watering.
  6. Press the plugs into the soil firmly, and use additional soil to fill the holes, ensuring the plugs are securely positioned and upright in the ground. The grass blades should be level with the ground.
  7. Keep the soil moist 6–8 inches deep every day until the plugs are established for the first 10–20 days after installation. This may require 2–4 waterings per day. Once new runners start to appear, decrease watering to twice a week.
  8. Ensure firm root establishment before mowing; gently tug a section to check. Mow only when the grass is dry to avoid soil compression and root issues. Set your mower at the highest level initially to prevent a vacuum effect; lower it gradually for future mowings.

Our high-quality grass plugs are shipped on Monday–Wednesday to guarantee their arrival before the weekend. This ensures that your grass plugs typically reach most locations in the US by Saturday.

For cost-effective shipping, remember that 3 plugs fit in a single box. Consider ordering 3 at a time if you anticipate needing more to cover your area. Save on shipping and enjoy your lush, green lawn!

It’s important to note that your plugs are living plants. After receiving the package, unpack the plug trays from the box right away. Some slight discoloration from lack of oxygen and sunlight during shipping may occur. Place the trays in a single layer and water the plugs immediately. We recommend planting your grass plugs as soon as possible but don’t worry if you can’t get to them right away, keep them moist until you are ready to plant them. For planting details click here.

What are grass plugs?
Grass plugs are individual plants that are grown in trays in controlled conditions. They are 1–2 inch diameter ready-to-plant turf. Over time, the grass plugs expand and spread into a fully formed lawn.

How do I use grass plugs?
Use plugs to fill in bare spots or replace a full yard. They are also great for trialing a new grass to see how well a certain type of grass performs in your yard. Grass plugs offer a cost-effective alternative to sod sections and are more straightforward to establish compared to seeding. For additional planting details click here.

When should I use grass plugs vs. sod and seed?
Plugs offer a hybrid solution to sod or seed. Use plugs for a more affordable solution to sod with more predictable growth. Sod provides an instantly lush lawn appearance from day 1, but comes at a higher cost. Seed is the most budget-friendly option but requires more time to grow and may result in uneven growth. When should I plant grass plugs?
The easiest time to plant plugs is in the spring or fall. Plugs can be planted ANYTIME but peak summer and dormant winter offer their own challenges as it relates to water management and plug care. Learn more here.

How much should I water new grass plugs?
Proper watering is critical. Water plugs immediately after planting for proper establishment. Give them a good soaking, but do not overwater. If the soil is soggy or the grass blades start to turn yellow, reduce watering. For the first 2 weeks after planting, water the grass plugs 2–4 times per day to keep the soil moist. Water should penetrate up to 6–8 inches of soil. After the first 2 weeks, gradually reduce the frequency of watering. Water the grass plugs every other day or less. Check the soil moisture regularly to ensure that it remains moist without becoming waterlogged or dried out.

Why are my grass plugs brown or yellow?
We deliver your plugs from the farm when it’s at its healthiest, vibrant green stage. During shipping, there might be some temporary yellowing due to reduced oxygen and water. Don’t worry, get them planted as soon as possible and take care of them like normal. They’ll bounce back to that beautiful green color usually within two weeks.

How long does it take for grass plugs to spread?
Plug spread depends on several factors, including the type of grass, the spacing of the plugs and the growing conditions. It typically takes around 6–12 months for them to fully establish after planting. But we have seen smaller areas fill in in as little as 2–4 weeks.
