Cobalt® St. Augustine Grass Plugs

I researched St Augustine varieties and settled on Cobalt. I have sandy loam soil. My front yard was a sad mix of common St Augustine struggling to come back and an unfortunate mass planting of Johnson Grass due to several years of cheap hay for decorations. I am Southwest 25 miles from San Antonio, and we finally got enough rain for the existing St Augustine to really spread but I knew I needed a better variety to combat inevitable drought and freezes. I have ordered the Cobalt plugs twice (3 trays each time) and planted after digging up Johnson Grass everywhere. We used a small-headed shovel and a large trowel to make the holes. We did not use any fertilizer but have been trying to water frequently. I am impressed with the spread so far and how healthy looking this new grass is. Most of my St Augustine has some degree of yellowing (needs nitrogen) but this variety is a beautiful green and blades are big. The plugs planted under large live oak tree and another large shade tree are doing the best! Plugs in almost full sun doing well too but not as well as in shade and mixed shade so far. For me these smaller size plugs are easier to plant than a larger product. Sod is too cost prohibitive and needs lots of advance prep. Plants arrived a day early each time and in great condition with only a little yellowing. Immediately unboxed and put in semi-shaded area and made sure they were kept moist until we had them all planted. Took us several days to plant 3 trays with very few losses. Do not wait too long to plant plugs since these will become rootbound and spread and take root in neighboring cells and then scissors needed to cut runners. I did pant a mixed shady area in back yard (St Augustine died back here years ago from harsh winter followed by long droughts and 2 big dogs), where we removed all the Johnson grass. Tip to any with this issue - cut off any seed heads and discard or you replant it! Very happy with both orders of Cobalt. Make sure water is soaking down.

Good but. ..

I had read about Cobalt St. Augustine and was excited to order the plugs. They arrived in good shape and I was able to plant them without incident, however I found the size of the plugs to be daunting; they are very small; plugs I've purchased from other establishments are 2 to 3 times the size of these, that would be my only issue, other than that I'm quite satisfied with the ourchase.

Cobalt Plugs Thriving in Austin TX

Planted these plugs in my Austin TX area backyard about 4 weeks ago (mid April start) . .. and they are thriving with stolons beginning to run. These plugs are on 12 inch centers and some plugs are already an inch or two away from connecting. Looking forward to seeing how well the plot fills in during the season.

Okay, but could be better.

I purchased the Cobalt St. Augustine plugs to grow under my oak trees and planted them 3 weeks ago. All plugs seem to have taken off. My only suggestion would be to ship bigger plugs like the standard 3 inch. I compensated for this by cutting a square of four of the tiny 1 x 1-inch plugs together. You can cut as many together as you want to make bigger plugs since they are all grown together anyway and impossible to separate without cutting.
