Bella® Bluegrass Maintenance Guide

Grass plugs are the perfect solution for filling in bare or damaged spots in your yard or starting a new lawn. Each individual plug tray comes with 72 plugs. Bella Bluegrass is the first dwarf vegetative bluegrass, thriving in cold climates and growing well in sand, clay, or peat.

Our 72-count plug trays can cover up to 72 square feet when spaced 6–18 inches apart on center. For quicker ground cover, plant each plug closer together. Each plug is 1.25 inches long x 1.25 inches wide x 2 inches tall.

Instructions

To install grass plugs, follow these steps:

1. Collect a soil sample and make any required soil amendments to create a conducive environment for plugs to grow.
2. Prepare the soil by removing any weeds or debris. Mow existing lawn close to the ground. Rake the soil smooth and level.
3. Water the soil thoroughly.
4. Dig up or use an auger bit to drill holes for the plugs, spacing each hole 6–18 inches apart.
5. Fertilize the holes before planting the grass plugs with a fertilizer that has a lot of phosphorus like Lawnifi Grow, the first bottle of the New Lawn Starter Box. Use Soil Moist Granules to reduce plant stress and watering.
6. Press the plugs into the soil firmly, and use additional soil to fill the holes, ensuring the plugs are securely positioned and upright in the ground. The grass blades should be level with the ground.
7. Keep the soil moist 6–8 inches deep every day until the plugs are established for the first 10–20 days after installation. This may require 2–4 waterings per day. Once new runners start to appear, decrease watering to twice a week.
8. Ensure firm root establishment before mowing; gently tug a section to check. Mow only when the grass is dry to avoid soil compression and root issues. Set your mower at the highest level initially to prevent a vacuum effect; lower it gradually for future mowings.

Plug trays ship Monday-Wednesday with an 11am cut-off the prior business day. For cost-effective shipping, remember that 3 plug trays fit in a single box. Consider ordering 3 at a time if you anticipate needing more to cover your area. Save on shipping and enjoy your lush, green lawn!

It's important to note that your plugs are living plants. After receiving the package, unpack the plug trays from the box right away. Some slight discoloration from lack of oxygen and sunlight during shipping may occur. Place the trays in a single layer and water the plugs immediately. We recommend planting your grass plugs as soon as possible but don’t worry if you can’t get to them right away, keep them moist until you are ready to plant them. For planting details click here.
