SodPods™ Palmetto® St. Augustine Grass Plugs

Ships Mon-Wed; order by 11am the previous business day.

SodPods are a type of grass plug that are great for filling in bare spots or testing the performance of a turfgrass variety. Our SodPods are available in 16, 32, and 64-count trays. Palmetto St. Augustine is known for its emerald-green color, shade tolerance, and disease resistance, ensuring a robust and healthy lawn.

SodPods are individual turf plants grown in trays. They are small clumps of grass that can be used to repair damaged areas of lawns, fill in patches of bare soil, trial a new grass type, or even start a new lawn. SodPod grass plugs are relatively inexpensive and easy to plant, and they grow quickly enough that you won’t have to wait long before they look good in your lawn. Here are some benefits of using grass plugs:

  • Grass plugs establish faster and require less water than seed.
  • Grass plugs are a more affordable option compared to sod, making them a cost-effective choice.
  • Palmetto St. Augustine SodPods are easy to establish and easy to maintain.
  • They provide a natural solution for repairing a damaged lawn, particularly in small areas.
  • You can use SodPod grass plugs for fun and creative DIY projects.
  • They are effective for repairing or filling in damaged spots.
  • You can test different grass varieties before committing to a full sod order.
Palmetto St. Augustine stands as a robust and flexible warm-season grass, thriving in sun-drenched areas while exhibiting remarkable drought and shade endurance. This grass type is highly adaptable, adjusting seamlessly to various soil conditions and climate types. Renowned for its rich green hue and wider blades, it provides your lawn with a lush, dynamic look. Notably, Palmetto St. Augustine showcases exceptional resistance to dry conditions and maintains good tolerance against cold, making it a highly adaptable option for diverse weather environments. To install grass plugs, follow these steps:

  1. Collect a soil sample and make any required soil amendments to create a conducive environment for plugs to grow.
  2. Prepare the soil by removing any weeds or debris. Mow existing lawn close to the ground. Rake the soil smooth and level.
  3. Water the soil thoroughly.
  4. Dig up or use an auger bit to drill holes for the plugs, spacing each hole 6–18 inches apart.
  5. Fertilize the holes before planting the grass plugs with a fertilizer that has a lot of phosphorus like Lawnifi Grow, the first bottle of the New Lawn Starter Box. Use Soil Moist Granules to reduce plant stress and watering.
  6. Press the plugs into the soil firmly, and use additional soil to fill the holes, ensuring the plugs are securely positioned and upright in the ground. The grass blades should be level with the ground.
  7. Keep the soil moist 6–8 inches deep every day until the plugs are established for the first 10–20 days after installation. This may require 2–4 waterings per day. Once new runners start to appear, decrease watering to twice a week.
  8. Ensure firm root establishment before mowing; gently tug a section to check. Mow only when the grass is dry to avoid soil compression and root issues. Set your mower at the highest level initially to prevent a vacuum effect; lower it gradually for future mowings.

Low survival rate

Appears these plugs may have come from a different source. About half appear to have not survived planting. Planted several hundred last year with only a few not surviving. Happy with coverage from initial purchase, not so much with latest plugs.

St Augustine Palmetto Sod Pods

The sod pods I received from Sod Solutions were absolutely beautiful! Healthy, a vibrant green, and a deep root system, arrived perfectly packaged and ready for planting. It took me the better part of 10 days to get all 64 of them in the ground (auger bit was the perfect solution for GA clay soil), but I have followed Sod Soultions' guidance and used a turf starter solution, as well as watering daily. They are absolutely beautiful and every one of them looks healthy and thriving, after 3 weeks in the ground. In fact, they've grown so much that I will likely need to give them a haircut this week.
Will be purchasing more of these next spring to continue my efforts to replace Zoysia with St Augustine (Zoysia isn't getting enough sun and is dying out).
