Colors to Make Your Lawn & Garden Pop
Do you desire new and different color to accent your perfect lawn? If so, you will be glad to know that every year, new varieties of annuals and perennials are developed by plant breeders, similar to how innovative varieties of turfgrasses are periodically introduced to help you create your ideal lawn. Read on to find out about some of our favorite new annuals and perennials.
So, what is the difference between an annual and a perennial?
Annual plants have a life cycle that lasts only a year, while perennial plants live for at least two years with an average life span of three to five years. Annual plants need to be replanted each spring and they typically bloom for a longer period of time from spring through the fall. Perennials, on the other hand, bloom for a shorter period of time each year, usually for just a couple of weeks, and do not need to be replanted each year. Some examples of popular annual plants are flowers such as marigolds or petunias, while perennial plants include most trees and flowers such as lavender and hydrangeas.
With so many new varieties to choose from, picking only one new annual and perennial was difficult. Nonetheless, here is our favorite annual and perennial for 2019:
Luscious® Citrus Blend™ Lantana camara
This highly reviewed annual lantana features vibrant hues of red, yellow, and orange, and has a continuous bloom from spring through fall. This easy to maintain plant is heat and drought tolerant and is the perfect plant to spice up any lawn. It is necessary to note that while the leaves and unripe berries of lantana can be toxic to pets, the blooms attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Additionally, lantana is largely deer-proof. Salvia nemorosa ‘White Profusion’
One of our favorite new perennials is Salvia “White Profusion”, which displays a brilliant white color that will stand out in any yard. This plant is deer and rabbit resistant, and one can enjoy a continuous bloom in spring and summer, as well as aromatic foliage. For more information, click here.
